THE FIVE REASONS YOU NEED AN MRI
1. When symptoms are persistent: Symptoms that persist despite treatment or continue to reoccur easily may be further evaluated with MRI to offer additional clinical information to the physician.Common persistent complaints often requiring MRI are constant headaches 1x a week or more, migraine headaches, back pain, neck pain, pain in the knees, shoulders or any joint.
3. When other diagnostic tests indicate MRI: Often other tests such as X-rays, Ultrasounds or Nerve Conduction Study’s indicate that an MRI is necessary to further evaluate. Typically MRI is NOT the entry level test performed on a patient. Most often, some other test(s) will have been performed first to help establish a preliminary picture offering information to the physician. It is not uncommon for those preliminary diagnostics to reveal reasons to perform a higher level, more sensitive test such as MRI.
4. When there is history or family history of certain illnesses: Cardiovascular disease often requires MRI to closely examine problems in the arteries. This can be especially helpful in evaluating the arteries of the heart and brain and can be life saving if detected early in these areas. A tumor due to cancer of any of the soft tissues is best visualized with MRI. Yes this also holds true for breast cancer! Mammograms serve as a cost effective screening process but medically speaking, are by and large, a crude way to image tumors in the breast tissue. MRI is definitely a more sensitive test and the way to go in order to obtain the best image possible.
5. When your doctor tells you need to have one: The best way to know if you need an MRI is to listen
What are the risk factors of having an MRI?
MRI has been around for decades and there have been no known negative side-effects reported. Apparently the only serious contraindication to performing MRI would be on patients with metal anywhere in or on their body. Since an MRI relies on producing a very powerful magnetic field to create the image, having a patient, medical professional or anyone else for that matter near the MRI unit with metallic objects in or on their body would be an unfavorable situation. Obviously patients with pacemakers, artificial joints, surgical clips or metallic fragments are not candidates for MRI. Every patient undergoes a careful screening process prior to being scanned with MRI.
